Sailfin Tetra (Crenuchus spilurus) Found in streams and flooded forest areas throughout a vast region of Amazonia, this fish prefers environments abundant in leaf litter, submerged wood, and overhanging plants. These habitats are often blackwater creeks that are rich in organic acids. The Sailfin tetra is a unique species that thrives best when kept in groups of at least 6 individuals (10 or more is even better). While they do not form tight shoals, these fish tend to do much better when surrounded by their own kind. This not only enhances their natural behavior but also results in a more impressive display. Adult males may occasionally show some territorial behavior towards each other, but as long as the tank is spacious and well-decorated with plenty of visual barriers, shady spots among rocks, bogwood, and dense plants, no serious harm should occur. The aquarium should be mature and well-filtered, ensuring a good level of oxygenation. Tankmates should be of similar size and temperament, and it is advisable not to house them with long-finned, small, or timid species.
